How Many Families Have We Helped Restore German Citizenship?
Since founding German Citizenship Restoration in 2019, we have worked with a growing number of families and individuals seeking to restore German citizenship. We are proud of the scale of our work, but we naturally take confidentiality seriously and would never share individual client stories or identify specific cases publicly. For us, confidentiality is not a limitation. It is part of the standard of care we provide.
What we can do is share the broader picture: the experience we have built, the legal routes we support, and the careful process we follow for every client. For most clients, restoring German citizenship is not a straightforward administrative task. It often involves tracing family history, reviewing documentary evidence, sourcing acceptable evidence relating to a client’s relevant ancestor, and selecting the correct legal route from the outset.
Why Experience Matters
German citizenship restoration is a specialist area. Every case begins with a no-obligation, free initial assessment, which consists of a detailed review of the family background, assessment of the relevant documents and confirmation of the legal basis for the application. A strong understanding of the process can help avoid unnecessary delays, avoidable mistakes and the frustration that comes from submitting the wrong material, the wrong format or following the wrong route.
Over time, we have seen how varied these cases can be. Some families have a clear paper trail, while others need extensive research in Germany to source proof and first establish the legal grounds for restoration. Focusing exclusively on restoring German citizenship means that we are deeply knowledgeable about the German authorities’ strict demands. We only move to the application stage once the route and supporting evidence has been sourced, and we are 100% confident of a positive outcome.
Presenting documentary evidence in the wrong format can cause an application to be denied or significantly delayed while the Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA) conducts its own checks. That is why experience matters: by the time our clients’ applications are submitted, the aim is to have it prepared so that it meets and exceeds the authorities’ strict requirements.
Our Work Since 2019
GCR was established in the aftermath of Brexit to help eligible people restore their family’s former German citizenship. What began with a small number of clients has grown steadily over the years, and we are now proud to support a global client base.
Since 2019, we have helped 131 families and individuals through the German citizenship restoration process. We are extremely proud of our untarnished record of successful applications.
We have achieved:
- 601 successful applications via Article 116 GG
- 103 successful applications via Section 15 of the German Nationality Act
- 6 applications (this is a relatively new route, with processing times of 3 years) via Section 5 of the German Nationality Act
Of course, we have many pending applications comprising several hundred applications waiting for approval. The German authorities’ average processing times are 30 – 36 months or more.
The Legal Routes We Support
Different families qualify under different legal pathways and identifying the correct route is an important part of the process. Depending on the family history and the circumstances involved, this may include routes under Article 116(2) GG, Section 15 or Section 5 of the German Nationality Act.
Each route has its own requirements, documentation needs and legal nuances. Our role is to assess the facts carefully, explain the options clearly and help clients move forward with confidence.
What Our Experience Looks Like in Practice
Experience is not only about the number of clients helped. It is also about the quality of the guidance provided, the consistency of the process and the ability to handle complex cases with care.
In practice, that means we regularly support clients with:
- Eligibility assessment.
- Document preparation.
- Route selection.
- German-language forms and communication.
- Ongoing client support throughout the application process.
We work with a wide range of family backgrounds, and no two cases are the same. That variety is part of why a specialist approach is so valuable.
The number of families we have helped tells only part of the story. It also reflects the trust clients place in us, the specialist knowledge we have built and the care we bring to each application.
Our focus has always been on meticulous preparation, strong legal understanding and a high standard of client service.
